Is colour design your new career?

Nov 9, 2021

Colour. It’s the passion and tormentor of artists throughout the ages. It’s what makes life juicy. If you’re always changing the colours in your homewares and interior designs and love playing with colour, then perhaps a career in colour consultancy is calling you. Or maybe you work in a job that requires you to advise on colour for the building industry.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could build on your skillset and advise on colour with confidence and expertise? Well, read on to discover what being a colour consultant involves, how much you can earn and the cost of setting up a business as a colour expert.

What is a colour expert?

A colour expert or consultant understands the function of colour, its instability and interactions, how different light conditions affect it and the adjustments that can be made when colours are given different placements relative to one another.

Colour consultants specify colours for any type of building or interior design project residential, commercial, retail, aged care, hospitality, etc, including internal and external walls, flooring, window coverings, kitchen finishes, bathroom finishes such as tiles and cabinetry, homewares and more – in short, anything you can have in the house or space that involves colour selection.

Become a Certified Colour Expert & Build your Business

A colour business is perfect for people already working in the industry. If you work for a company that sells paint, flooring, tiles, homewares, kitchens or bathrooms, becoming a colour expert is an ideal addition to your skillset and one that you can offer as a supplementary service to customers of your current employer (if permissible). At the very least, your work in the industry will provide excellent leads to set up your side business as a colour consultant. It’s also a wonderful skill set to have to open doors into work for any of those building-related industries.

But you don’t have to be working in the industry to set yourself up in a business as a colour consultant. This work is ideal for those who need flexibility in their hours so that they can balance work and family commitments more easily. Work part-time or full time directly with clients or partner with other professionals such as builders, developers, or architects.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to set yourself up as a solopreneur colour consultant. At a basic level you’ll need the following to get started:

  • An ABN (Australian Business Number) or the equivalent in your country (if applicable) – register for free

  • A website – I recommend Groovesell for a free website

  • A registered domain – I recommend Namecheap at a cost of around $12* per year.

  • An email that uses your business name (yourbusiness.com.au) – I recommend Google Workspace. There is a monthly fee of $8.40* with 30GB cloud storage and as many general email accounts as you like (info, support etc) at no extra cost   OR

  • free email Google account ([email protected]) that comes with 5GB of cloud storage.

  • Social media to promote your brand and generate leads (free).

  • A colour designer kit (next month’s blog post will further refine what’s needed in your designer kit to build your own colour consultancy business, stay tuned!).
